Once a Chiropractic patient,
In my travels, I have heard the public make one chief compaint about chiropractic care. That is, "They keep you coming back!" I have to chuckle in wonderment when I hear this. When you were young and had a toothache, was your mother or father afraid to take you to a dentist because...once a dental patient, always a dental patient? Or afraid to take you to a medical doctor for an ear infection because once a medical patient always a medical patient? Somehow, the public has received misinformation about chiropractic care. Let's explore this issue. When a person begins treatment with a chiropractor, it is true that he/she is typically asked to return for multiple visits in the beginning phase of care - for a good reason. Your bones are used to being out of alignment. This misaligned position is as much a habit as, for example, having a cup of coffee every morning, or eating dessert at the end of the meal. If you would want to stop drinking coffee or stop eating dessert, could you do it immediately with cravings? Let's return to the idea of visiting a dentist. Isn't it true that some people can eat anything, practice average dental hygiene and never have problems with their teeth? On the other hand, some people require a lot of dental care in spite of their diet and hygiene practice. We say they have "soft" teeth, and accept the fact of dental visits for the rest of their lives. The same theory holds true with your spine. Some people, especially those who don't exercise or lead sedentary lives, are bound to have problems requiring chiropractic care. Some people actually have their first subluxation (spinal misalignment) at birth due to required forceful methods of delivery. As an infant, the child could have chronic sinus infections, ear infections, digestive problems, clumsiness, colic, bed wetting, etc. That type of person will require some chiropractic care if it's only four times a year for their entire life. Treatment required could be reduced dramatically by exercising at least three times a week and eating a diet rich in fresh fruits and vegetables. Without proper chiropractic care, they are bound for chronic health problems in one form or another. That type of person is akin to the dental patient who will always need dental care. If they ignore their teeth, they will lose them. If, on the other hand, you are basically in good health and become injured, once function is restored, you probably won't require further care, unless you reinjure yourself. It must be stressed that strengthening the muscles through exercise at least three time per week and eating a diet rich in fruits and vegetables can keep you in good shape. So once a chiropractic patient, always a chiropractic patient, is truly a misnomer. If the truth be known, chiropractic is such an effective means of stress reduction that patients often choose to use chiropractic as a form of preventative health care. |
